Founded in 1998, Faculty of Humanities (Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, FIB) is one of the faculties in the Universitas Airlangga, encompassing four Departments and two Master’s Programs with a wide range of academic offerings in the Humanities realms.
Together with our special programs (Double Degree opportunities, our Fast Track
program, Summer Course, and a wide range of overseas Student Exchange Program
opportunities), FIB offers one of the most comprehensive and enriching educational
experiences globally.
While our Faculty comprises a wide variety of programs, all share the common goals
of becoming an independent, innovative, and prominent faculty in national and
international level, pioneer of development in humanity and arts studies based on
religious moral. We truly believe that such inquiry is fundamental to our
understanding of and the betterment of humanity. Our aim is to equip our students
with the skills of critical thinking, writing, research, and problem-solving that are
valuable to any organisation and industry, to meet the challenges of the fastchanging world we live in today.
As a large and comprehensive faculty, FIBis advancing research in a number of key
areas, particularly in the study of East Java Province. Amongst our many areas of
research excellence, we have strengths in research on Language, Media, and
Technology; Comparative Literature; Manuscript and Local Tradition; Urban;
Gender; Religion, Multiculturalism, and Globalization; Border, Mobilities, and Area
Engagements; and Creative Industry. Having such a breadth and depth of research
strengths mean that FIB can offer excellent guidance for our graduate students in
the wide range of topics that interest them, again with particular richness in
Indonesian research. At the graduate level, too, we are distinguished by special
programmes of Literary and Cultural Studies, and Linguistics. Undergraduates also
benefit in terms of our Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, which
allows them to work directly with top researchers on their current research projects.
The quality of an institution is perhaps best seen in the alumni it produces. We are
very proud of our illustrious alumni, many of whom have gone on to become
academicians, researchers, journalists, leaders in Indonesian government,
representing Indonesia in the international relations arena and in industries, and
making signal contributions to Indonesian society.
